Cora,
One problem is that plans change. Some who start college leave after one year. Some who never planned to go to college, change their minds after they have been out of high school for 10 years.
Those who go to community colleges or trade school are quite likely to need a recognized diploma, Community colleges in NY don´t even matriculate a student who doesn´t have a diploma. One of our grads was told by a community college in the South that he would have to retake even the most elementary math courses if he didn´t have a diploma (fortunately he had a PHAA diploma).
Some who never planned to homeschool their own children change their minds. (Remember a high school diploma or its equivalent is required to homeschool in Pennsylvania and about 17 other states.)
You are correct that most homeschool grads never need a diploma. But I hear from several diploma-less homeschool grads each month who have run into problems.
