Jenny,

There is no foreign language requirement for Pennsylvania home education programs. However, if you do take American Sign Language (ASL) or a foreign language, either would help meet the graduation requirement for two years of Arts and Humanities.

Some college require two or three years of a foreign language for admission. They differ upon whether or not they consider ASL as meeting that requirement. If you are thinking of applying to a particular college that has a foreign language requirement, give their admissions office a call. Please report back here what you learn.

On December 9, 2002, Governor Schweiker signed Act 189 of 2002 which contained may provisions that changed the Pennsylvania school code, one of which was a provision giving public school students foreign language high school credits for ASL courses.

While this act did not specifically affect home education programs, it did make it more legitimate for homeschoolers to teach their children ASL instead of teaching them a foreign language.

Howard
