An article by Susan Harragin in today´s Worchester (MA) Telegram and News features Rich Wagner the homeschooled dad who will be touring the country by bycicle with his family to promote his new book, shown above. Here´s a selection from the article:
Rich Wagner believes men are “hard-wired for adventure.”HowardAs a Christian, he also knows men are called to the duties of family, work and church.
The trouble, he suggests, is that a man cannot balance his need for personal adventure with the call of duty as long as he sees those as opposing interests.
Responding to this challenge in his own life, Mr. Wagner left a high-powered job as a software engineer in California to settle in Massachusetts for the uncertain life of a full-time author. Now he is leading his family on a cross-country bicycle trip to promote his new book on this topic.
“The Expeditionary Man: The Adventure a Man Wants, the Leader His Family Needs,” published by Zondervan, explores how a man, conditioned by society to get his primary adventure rush from work, can shift his focus and satisfy his needs by being a strong leader of his family — particularly while he has children at home....
The trip began yesterday in San Diego. From there, the family will journey across 10 states, to Charleston, S.C.
The adventure will take 28 days including four rest days. Team Wagner will average just over 100 miles each day as they climb mountains, coast on rolling hills, and labor across the flatlands — all as a family. Along the way, they will be hosted by various Christian congregations.
“The first day is going to be hard because there are, like, 30 miles of mountains right away. But after that it will be easy,” asserted 15-year-old Jared, who will pedal the entire route with his father....
Jared’s brothers, 17-year-old Jordan and 14-year-old Justus, will each ride parts of the trip as well as taking on the technical and videography roles. Mr. Wagner’s wife, Kim, is driving the support vehicle....
