Thanks, Sharon-- this info is correct. I just wanted to add that the ´long composition´ does not *have* to be a ´research paper´. It could be a fictional short story, a personal narrative about an experience the student has had (travel, overcoming a personal challenge, describing a special activity, etc...), or a literary analysis. The choice is up to each family. We simply want each student to have an experience of creating a *longer* extended piece of meaningful writing, on a subject of special interest to them.
And yes, showing a *variety* of types of writing is best. And also know that most strong high school students have MANY many more than just four finished compositions in their portfolios-- remember, ´minimums´ are not ´maximums´!!
