These brief guidelines were designed for parents of kids in public schools K-6.

But homeschooling parents might enjoy checking out the idea, and playing it off against their own expectations.

The idea is called American Basic Curriculum (ABC). Here´s a short press release with more details and a link to the material.

PS: The suggested benchmarks have a special relevance given that the Education Establishment is pushing for Common Standards. What do you want to bet they are low, mushy, and full of vague demands that children learn Critical Thinking, Cooperative Learning, and How to Prepare a Scrapbook. That´s NOT the kind of benchmarks we need.

(The benchmarks are part of an article called "43: American Basic Curriculum" on Improve-Education.org.) BTW this site is now entering its fifth year and has reached 100,000 words of original content. Many articles deal with reading.)
