The Kiski-Conemaugh Stream Team would like to take this opportunity to offer exciting hands-on education. The K-C Stream Team was formed in 1998, because of the recognized need for a basin-wide water quality assessment and educational outreach program. Our outreach program consists of education for various individuals and organizations. We will come to your location or classroom and present programs that consist of water quality assessment, abandon mine drainage (AMD) and macroinvertebrates. Aside from our in-class presentations, we also conduct symposiums in the spring. During the spring symposiums, students will experience “hands-on” activities dealing with AMD, wetlands, natural biodiversity, and macro-invertebrates. Students will learn the causes of AMD and see the impact it has on our environment.Proper sampling procedures will be demonstrated, and students will participate in field sampling and chemical analysis. Plant and animal species living in the wetlands will be observed in their natural habitat, and participants will learn about the wetland’s invaluable contribution to the environment (dependant on location). The natural biodiversity study will identify and illustrate the importance of a well-balanced ecosystem and the threats posed by invasive species. A presentation on the importance of macroinvertebrates will precede a demonstration of sampling techniques. Students will conduct a sampling and identify macroinvertebrates collected and interpret the health of the stream based on the survey. The places, dates and time for the symposiums will be set once we receive interests. The symposiums will be conducted in late March, April and May. We can only accept 30-35 students per symposium; however, if there is a large interest in your geographic region, other symposium dates will be offered. If you are interested in attending one of our symposiums, or would like us to come to your community please feel free to contact Kayla, the Environmental Education Coordinator. We’re very flexible and willing to work with you to make a great learning experience for your students. Our schedule gets booked early, so please contact us soon to reserve a date. Thank you!
