PA Homeschoolers Homeschool Excellence Day Project Fair

October 15, 2003, Capitol Building, Harrisburg, 9AM - 3PM

Categories include Service/Entrepreneurship, History/Geography, Science, and Art

We are pleased to be offering so many categories in this year's Homeschool Excellence Day Project Fair to represent the wide ranging interests and activities of homeschoolers in the state.

Service and Entrepreneurship: The Service part of this category is for display exhibits on special service activities that homeschoolers (either individuals or groups) have taken part in over the past year. We want to give recognition to the many homeschoolers who put in so many hours at any of the following types of service activities- all ones real homeschoolers in this state have completed:

Exhibits in the Entrepreneurial section of this category can include freestanding diplay projects related to work experiences where a student has shown real initiative to learn about a new vocational field of any sort, helping the student be well-prepared to be an active contributing member of our society and our PA economy. Students should develop free-standing exhibits with lots of photographs, captions, 3-D models or creative representations of their project, and a essay describing their service or entreprenneurial work.

Geography and Travel will again be included in the History Project section of Excellence Day. Students can present research they've completed focusing on a specific country or region of the world, or some facet of geography such as trade links between countries, music customs around the world, folklore from different regions, children's novels from around the world, where all the parts of a common object (such as a pencil) come from around the world, immigration from country to country, the importance of a major waterway or mountain system, how man has used and changed the physical world, changing patterns in use of natural resources, cultural traits, where languages have traveled over time, or any other geography-related project. Students could also create a presentation about their own personal travel experiences, either within the US or PA, or abroad to different countries. Many support groups already host 'Countries of the World Fairs' and projects presented at these events could be very suitable now for Homeschool Excellence Day. Exhibits should be free-standing poster displays, including photos, art or craft work, original maps, or some type of clear and engaging visual display of their Geography or Travel topic, with title and captions, and a written essay describing their studies. This could take the form of an illustrated travel journal or scrapbook of a real trip, showing all that was learned. Creative approaches welcome, such as creating your own original travel brochure after a trip, an original alphabet book about their chosen country or geography theme, writing an imaginary trip journal based on research rather than actual travel.
