General Rules for All Projects for Homeschool Excellence Day


The following are the guidelines, developed by Diana Merkel, Excellence Day Fair Coordinator, for submitting your projects for the Seventh Annual Homeschool Excellence Day Project Fair, Wednesday, October 3, 2001, in the East Wing of the Capitol Building in Harrisburg.

 

1. REGISTRATION: A 3x5 card for each project must be completed with the following information and be sent to Diana Merkel, 722 Westfield CT, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050. One self addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) must be included. There is a $5.00 fee per project to help defray the cost of renting the tables. (Make check payable to PA Homeschoolers):

     Top Line: Category (Choose One: Art: Drawing, Painting, Open / History/ Science-Display, or Science-Experiment)

     2nd Line: Height-Width-Depth of project in inches

     3rd Line: Title of Project

     4th Line: Last, First name of child and age (of child when project was completed)

     5th Line: Parents’ names

     6th Line: Street Address

     7th Line: Town, State Zip

     8th Line: (area code) phone number

     9th Line: email address (print clearly)

     10th Line: PA state representative’s and state senator’s names, or (if you don’t know) your county and either  borough, ward, or township of residence.

 

Project entries will be accepted from August 1 until September 15 (postmarked date). Project entries with problems will be returned. It may be submitted again when it is corrected. You will receive your project number and directions for its placement on the project by mail if the entry was completed correctly.

 

Guidelines for Projects

Projects will be judged on Originality, Scientific Approach (for science experimments), Clarity, Accuracy (Science  & History dislays), Workmanship, Appearance, and Creativity.

  1. REGISTRATION: A 3x5 card for each project must be completed with the following information noted above.
  2. SAFETY: Animated or “push button” exhibits must be easily and safely operated. Any exhibit using anything that is potentially dangerous will not be accepted. No animals or plants can be displayed-- use photographs.
  3. ELECTRICITY: Please include a note if you need electricity. Availability is not guaranteed.  BRING YOUR OWN EXTENSION CORD.
  4. GROUP PROJECTS: Group projects will be accepted and judged separately from individual entries. A group consists of 2 or more students (from one family or friends). The project will be judged in the age division of the oldest student.
  5. MARKING YOUR EXHIBIT: Your title must be on the front of your science or history exhibit.  No exhibits should bear the name or picture of exhibitor  or any awards previously won prior to judging at Excellence Day.
  6. SIZE OF YOUR EXHIBIT: No project may exceed 36" from side to side, and 30" from front to back and may not exceed 60" in height. All projects must be free-standing—no wall space will be available. An exhibit cannot be on the floor.
  7. ART PROJECTS: Size:  NO exceptions to the size limits. The limits refer to the COMPLETED project, including the frame. The size limit for a completed, framed art project in art-drawing, art-painting, and 2-Dart-open is: 18" x 21" or 21" x 18". The size limit for a 3-D Art-open project  displayed on a table is: 18" wide x 18" high x 12" deep.

Framing: Drawings, 2-D open, and paintings MUST be framed. The frame does not need to be expensive. Framed art MUST be ready to hang. MATTING is optional.  The framed art MUST include a 6 foot loop of string attached to the back for hanging.

List of Art Materials Used: A typed list of all media and materials used (i.e.: colored pencils, acrylic paint, canvas, glue, etc.) must be submitted with each art project. The list should be on a white 4x6 card or paper cut to that size, placed next to the displayed art. Leave a space 1" high and 4" wide on the top of your card for the exhibit number.  The project number must also be written on the back or bottom of the art project, too.

  1. INSTALLATION: All exhibits, once registered and set up between 9:00-10:00am, must remain at the Fair until 3:00pm.

 

Following all of these procedures will really help the Fair run smoothly, and insure a quality display of projects. Thanks for everyone’s cooperation!
