An article by Mary Clyde in the Tehachapi (CA) News reports that local parents are just continuing to homeschool as usual, while making plans of what they will do should worst come to worst. Here is a selection:
Tehachapi-area families are taking a wait-and-see approach in response to a recent state appellate court ruling stating that parents do not have a constitutional right to school their children at home.HowardSome of the area parents interviewed indicated they simply would “wait and see which way the wind blows” before getting too excited and considering alternative plans for their children´s education.
Last week Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger sharply criticized the ruling from the 2nd District Court of Appeal in Los Angeles, which concluded "all children ages 6 to 18 must attend public or private school full-time until graduation from high school or be tutored at home by a credentialed teacher."
“I have reviewed this case, and I want to assure parents that chose to homeschool that the CDE policy will not change in any way as a result of this ruling. Parents still have the right to homeschool in our state,” O´Connell said....
When asked what they would do if the court ruling prevailed statewide, Vanderhorst jokingly said, “I´d lock my doors and pretend not to be home!”
Other families, who wished to remain anonymous, indicated they had thought about moving out of state and living here part-time to ensure that their homeschooling efforts continued....
