Bethany - I like the Prentice Hall Science Explorer series. There are several hardback books, each on a different science topic. You can pick the ones your son is interested in, or the ones you feel will best prepare him for high school.
There is a workbook to go along with each book.
They are designed for middle school science.
You can pick up the previous edition second hand quite cheaply, and order the workbooks from Prentice Hall.
Why not enlist a few friends to create a science co-op? You could do one unit a week at home, then get together to do related experiments and activities.
As to civics, one way is to get involved locally with some kind of issue or cause.
