Teri,
It is up to each district to decide whether or not they want to allow access to academic classes. Currently, my 9th grade daugther attends public school for 3 classes.
I called the district a few years ago when my son was interested in doing this. Inititally there were reservations about kids running in and out of the building, but I countered that with a program that was already currrently in place in our district that allowed students to attend the local university for a class or two. Those students were signing in and out to attend these classes and couldnīt the same system be used for a homeschooler to enter and exit the building.
I was prepared to write a policy that permitted homeschoolers access, but when I called the superintendent, he said upon review of the policy manual he didnīt see anything that prohibited it and didnīt think it necessary to add policy. I liked his simple solution!
When my kids do go to the school, I remind myself that we fall into a fuzzy area. While the homeschool law is what I follow, I am mindful of the school attendence policy, regulations, etc. It is sometimes a little frustrating being tied to the school schedule, but it seems to have been a good compromise for our family.
So schools donīt have to allow this access, but those who do create feelings of good-will and find that if everyone works together it does work!
