The above photo shows Daijua-Corin Miller with some of the cupcakes and cookies that she bakes. It appears in a feature story about her in today´s Charlotte Observer. Here´s a selection from the story which tells how she got started:
Daijua’s first memory of cooking was helping her mother season chicken when she was 3. When she was 9, she started baking with mixes. It wasn’t long before that just wasn’t enough.
“I realized I liked being in the kitchen,” she says. She went to her parents and told them she wanted to bake. Sure, they said. “I was like, ‘No, I want to BAKE. I want to make my own recipes.’ ” Their reply, according to Daijua: “‘Sure – we have a fire extinguisher.’” Actually, setting up a pre-teen baking business wasn’t so easy. In order to sell commercial baked goods, you have to have a state-inspected kitchen.....
