To Home schooling groups-
I wanted to pass along some information regarding a new trail at Warwick County Park. I feel that it would be an excellent educational day trip to hike the iron heritage trail and learn about the charcoal making process and how it relates to American history. Please call if you are interested in a guided tour of this trail. For a guided tour this a $3 fee per person, but you are always welcome to visit the park on your own and there is no charge. We offer many educational programs beside our interpretative trails, you can visit www.chesco.org/ccparks to learn more.
Warwick Charcoal Interpretation Trail
In 1717, Coventry Iron Works was founded just three miles east of Warwick County Park. This was the first of 37 documented forges and furnaces built in northern Chester County between 1717 and 1800. Charcoal was crucial to the production of iron to fuel the iron furnaces and forges. Warwick´s hardwood forest was part of the thousands of acres utilized in the production of charcoal throughout the region.
The Charcoal Interpretation Trail will encourage visitors to imagine what the Warwick woods looked like when charcoal production fueled the creation of the villages surrounding the park. Imagine how it provided the wealth to build the iron masters’ mansions, blacksmith shops and successful colliers’ homes that still survive today. Each stop along the trail is an actual charcoal hearth, the center of charcoal production.
